Pipeline Attack Reduces Iraq Oil Exports
July 21, 2012 - An explosion at the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline inside Turkey stopped a quarter of Iraq's oil exports briefly but supplies began to flow again over the weekend, officials said.
The July 20 attack came near Midyat,, about 60 miles northwest of Turkey's tri-border region with Iraq and Syria. The Turkish government blamed Kurdish rebels for the attack, but no group claimed responsibility.
Oil began arriving at the Turkish port city of Ceyhan by Monday, Dow Jones Newswire reported.
Firefighters extinquished a blaze hours after the explosion and officials closed a parallel pipeline for safety reasons.
The Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline, one of several that flows through Turkey from various countries, carries between 300,000 and 450,000 barrels a day from the Kurdistan region of northern of Iraq to Ceyhan, a major oil port city on the eastern bank of the Mediterranean sea. It has been target of many attacks since it opened in 1977. An attack in April 2012, closed the pipeline for three days.
