South Sudan Takes Sudanese Oil Town of Heglig

Forces of South Sudan crossed the border of its former compatriot country and seized the oil-producing town of Heglig.

South Sudan, which gained independence in 2011 after a protracted civil war, has been in a dispute over territory and pipeline fees with Sudan, its northern neighbor. Border clashes had been growing in early 2012, coming to a head with this battle.

The United Nations and the United States immediately condemned the attack and called for a withdrawal.

Oil-rich blocks of territory straddle the world's freshest border lines, but the existing pipelines run north through Sudan. South Sudan has accused the Khartoum government of overcharging for transit rights and is hoping to build its own pipeline on a southerly route.
