Iraqi Refinery Attacked By Militants
Oil Corridor OffensiveThe Islamic State of the Levant and Iraq shelled a refinery that produces about one fourth of Iraq's fuel. Baiji, lays on the Tigris River 155 north of Baghdad. It is south of Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq which the militants overran last week.
ISLI (sometimes referred to as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria or ISIS) is a major force in the Syrian civil war but also has extended its offensive into the oil regions of Iraq. Its attack on Mosul brought to a halt repair work on the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline that had been bombed in March.
