Food Trade

The international trade in agricultural products was $1.659 trillion in 2011, of which $1.3 trillion was food, according to the World Trade Organization.

This flow of food across the globe not only affects the huge financial transactions and the billions of people who are fed. It also impacts water and soil resources, the ethical treatment of animals, deforestation and the use of fossil fuel inputs. Lack of food, if not outright famine, can initiate large-scale population displacement, if not outright armed conflict.
